75870 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Review

As the Chevrolet Corvette races into the LEGO Speed Champions range, is it going to be placed at the finish line or trailing at the rear?

While I have been impressed with the Ferrari 458 Italia and Porsche 911 GTs within the Speed Champions range, the rest of the line up has been pretty much hit or miss – the McLaren P1 was an absolute horror. In 2016 there have been a few better models, thankfully one of them being the Corvette Z06.

Like most of the Speed Champion sets, this is a 6-stud wide model. It is a fairly straight forward build, with no overly complicated techniques involved. The minifigure, with the officially licensed overalls, is great. I am not a fan of stickers by a long shot, but this model needs them applied or it would look very flat as a finished build. The addition of the film camera as an accessory leaves the builder wondering ‘why?’

This set does a fairly decent job of representing the actual car, but I still can’t help thinking that this is just a caricature. The real car is low and slinky – dare I say quite beautiful to look at, having seen one in the metal at the Geneva Motor Show this year – but this one just looks a bit too chunky to capture the Corvette lines.

But this is the problem with the Speed Champions sets – some cars are done very well, and some are just not right. I have to say that the ‘vette falls into the latter. It is frustrating for a petrol head like myself as there is massive potential, but ultimately, the rigidity of the brick limits the accuracy at this scale.

My name is Keith and I am a AFOL. Currently an expat living out in Basel, CH, but have a firm footing back in the UK when time permits.

I have had had Lego ever since I can remember - and only until my wee one came along have I re-kindled the flame for building again.

I also run matchbox1-75.co.uk, a resource site for the 1-75 series of miniatures by Matchbox.

There are only three themes that I am get/collect (finances permitting) - City, Creator (Advanced and Expert) as well as the classic Star Wars sets from Eps IV to VI (anything else does not exist). I also keep an eye in Europe with ample chance to see how France, Germany and Switzerland market and offer LEGO.
