Dangling our rod into the waters surrounding LEGO CITY, we see whether a prized catch turns up or a disappointing haul.

As a LEGO enthusiast and MOC builder I’m not naturally drawn to the LEGO CITY sets, but this may well be a turning point. My first impression, before even opening the box, was that this was a lovely looking set and also great value for money.

The main part of the build is the boat, which begins with a single, large hull part on which the other parts are built. The hull is very slick in shape and the stickers are easily applied and, of course, this part is key to enabling the finished model to float which it does beautifully.

The competed vessel looks great and includes all of the features you’d expect. The deck has plenty of space for positioning minifigures and includes a life saver as well as lighting. The cockpit works well and is covered by a roof which includes navigational equipment and additional lighting. The roof is easily removed so that a minifigure can be placed in the cockpit which includes a small splash screen and a delightful fish finder display screen. While being a simple build, the rotating sport fishing seat works really well and allows the minifigures to secure the fishing rod in a rod-cup ready to catch those big-game fish.

Moving to the stern of the vessel the build includes storage containers to hold any fish that are caught after which there are two striking outboard motors which are hinged to allow for any maintenance that may be required. The stern also includes a tile which, after applying a sticker, confirms that the boat is called ‘Mary’ which finishes the build nicely.

The colour scheme throughout works really well, especially the combination of white and dark red. The grey rails and the antennae add the finishing touches to what is a great looking build.

The two minifigures in this set look very much fit for the part and ready to pilot this fine vessel. Both minifigures have torsos that are printed on both sides and the set includes life jackets for each of them. The crew of two works nicely with the boat in that one can take control of piloting while the other indulges in a spot of sport fishing.

The accessories include a buoy, three fish (two orange and one pearl silver) and a shark, all of which work well with the set and add to the playability.

This is a great value set which looks good and also has more playability than I was expecting. This review set found itself moored near the Spider-Man Bridge Battle set after which it was pirated by Green Goblin and Kraven the Hunter who, after making their getaway, spent an afternoon fishing just off the coast – a wonderful endorsement if ever there was one.
