#ThrowbackThursday – 6273 Rock Island Refuge

We go back to 1991 for this week’s #throwbackthursday as I look at another set from my childhood. This was the other set I owned that had the ramp and pit baseplate and was the largest Pirate-themed island base from the entire Pirates theme. It was also called Port Jamaica in some areas but for me it was always Rock Island and a place for the Pirates to store all their treasure in. The pit had a large grate over it but I loved the rope bridges so you could get around the island.

I can’t remember the retail price in the UK but I did pick up one a few years ago for £60+ in used condition off eBay. To get a MISB it will set you back over £400 now via Bricklink. I built this as mentioned again a few years back and not sure if it was either my age or the fact where LEGO is now that I didn’t get the same enjoyment as I did back in ’91 and was the reason I stopped getting old sets as didn’t want to spoil the fond memories I did have.

One thing I do miss are the older boxes – so much better and the alternative builds are on the back were ace!

Did you own this set? If so what were your memories of it and do you still own it? Photos courtesy of the Plastic Brick
