Incredible 10,000-piece LEGO jazz poster wins latest Ideas contest

An incredible 10,000-piece brick-built poster has taken pole position in LEGO Ideas’ latest contest, which was held to celebrate the launch of 21334 Jazz Quartet.

The LEGO Ideas team offered a blank canvas for its music-themed competition: design a poster for 21334 Jazz Quartet, whether in bricks, digitally or even drawn by hand. The winning entries are subsequently split between different mediums, with one brick-built poster and two artistic interpretations taking home the three prize packages.

First place has gone to 10K club member Richard Dane, who reached the LEGO Ideas review stage with a Retro Arcade build (which was then rejected by the review board). Their ‘Under the Stars’ build is an enormous brick-built backdrop for 21334 Jazz Quartet, which measures a stunning 96×108 studs – and contains more than 10,000 pieces.

It’s so breathtakingly huge that you might need to zoom in to appreciate the details, or even to realise that it is indeed constructed from individual LEGO elements. Given the sheer quantity of plastic involved, the poster was designed virtually in BrickLink Studio, and sits behind the four brick-built musicians of 21334 Jazz Quartet.

The two runners-up – Psych0ticsl0th and LEGOartteacher – also incorporate the LEGO figures from the latest Ideas set into their entries, but have both eschewed traditional LEGO bricks for drawn artwork instead. They’ve each won 21329 Fender Stratocaster21331 Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Hill Zone21334 Jazz Quartet and a LEGO Ideas tote bag.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.

Sure looks nice but is it fun to build? Probably not. And you need to buy the already overpriced quarter set too for this to make any sense. Hard pass.
