10302 Optimus Prime was an unexpected surprise for LEGO fans, as the LEGO Group and Hasbro (who makes Transformers toys) are typically business rivals. However, it seems the two companies have managed to bury the hatchet – and now a LEGO Optimus Prime is fulfilling the dreams of many an ’80s nerd. This new partnership has been explored in detail on LEGO.com.
Optimus Prime is the leader of the Autobots within Transformers media, and the most iconic character of the Transformers franchises more broadly. The LEGO version preserves his most familiar play feature: namely, being able to transform into a cab-over truck. This can be done without taking the LEGO model apart, in an impressive feat of engineering.
In addition to Optimus himself, 10302 Optimus Prime comes with a number of accessories. These include an ion blaster, an Energon axe and a pink Energon cube. The Matrix of Leadership is also represented in LEGO form, and can be physically stored in Optimus Prime’s chest.
As such, there’s plenty for Transformers fans to enjoy here – even if, unsurprisingly, articulation can be limited in some places. The set comes with a hefty price tag of £149.99 / $169.99 / €169.99, which might give you pause if you’re on the fence.
But if the success of LEGO Star Wars has proven anything, it’s that high prices aren’t really a barrier to entry any more. As such – if you’re interested in this set – we recommend buying it soon to avoid a lengthy wait for a restock.
