LEGO 10302 Optimus Prime rolls out today
The first official LEGO Transformers set is now available for purchase, with its transforming play features intact.
10302 Optimus Prime was a welcome announcement for both LEGO and Transformers fans. The set recreates Optimus Prime – leader of the Autobot faction within the Transformers universe – and is usually seen as one of the franchise’s most iconic characters. A LEGO version is therefore welcome indeed.
It was also an unexpected move as, traditionally speaking, the LEGO Group and Transformers maker Hasbro are business rivals. Our inside story on the set’s creation reveals Hasbro was the one who got the ball rolling. Clearly, such a set was of mutual benefit to both companies.
The set itself takes inspiration from Optimus Prime’s early incarnations, with his classic red and dark blue colour scheme preserved. Optimus comes with a variety of accessories including two weapons, an Energon cube and even the Matrix of Leadership artefact. Crucially, he can also transform into a cab-over truck without any disassembly.
As you might expect, there are a few compromises in the LEGO version. Articulation is somewhat limited in the legs, although articulation on the upper body is quite extensive. At £149.99 / $169.99 / €169.99 it’s not quite an impulse buy, either.
Still, this is an impressive LEGO model and a pop-culture darling – and for those reasons, we anticipate a very warm reception. If you’re interested in picking this set up, now might be the time to do so.
