LEGO Ideas 21335 Motorised Lighthouse’s Fresnel lens went through a few prototypes

The brand new Fresnel lens piece in LEGO Ideas 21335 Motorised Lighthouse went through a lot of prototypes before the final design.

As highlighted in Tiago Catarino’s early review of LEGO Ideas 21335 Motorised Lighthouse, the instructions for the model give us a look at the prototype versions of the Fresnel lens element, which is new and currently exclusive to 21335 Motorised Lighthouse.

There were at least 10 LEGO Fresnel lens prototypes for 21335 Motorised Lighthouse, ranging from window elements inside of a frame piece to clip attachments and smaller circular bricks.

Only one closely resembles the final design for the Fresnel lens element, which measures four studs across and two studs deep. Compared to some of the other prototypes, the lens part of this brick is larger, potentially improving how well it can focus the light.

The decision to spread the lens across four studs as opposed to three might be for structural integrity or stability to keep the lens in place on the motorised model and to stop it from being damaged over a long period.

Whatever the reasons, it’s interesting to see how this new and unique element changed during development and you’ll be able to find this brick in 21335 Motorised Lighthouse from September 1.
