70334 Ultimate Beast Master review

Nexo Knights, the next big in-house theme from LEGO. LEGO are hoping it is more popular then Ninjago and at least better then Legends of Chima that unfortunately didn’t quite live up to the hype. Nexo Knights is a mash up of themes set in the future that LEGO hopes will appeal to fans of Castle, Space and even the Steampunk fans. LEGO have spared no punches with a mass media campaign, TV show and app all supporting the new theme. The app is free and an integral part of the theme especially for the Ultimate sets that retail at £6.99. I’ve received one for review, so here is what I think of it:

The Review

So I’ve got one of the first wave bad guys in the form of the Beast Master. The Ultimates come in unique packaging and LEGO really do push the app on the cover of the box. You get to the contents via the bottom of the box where inside you find the instructions booklet and two clear packets with the elements within.

The booklet is A6 in size and is presented in a horizontal layout. The build is spread over 22 pages with the back advertising the app, scanning times, the website, a page for the other ultimate sets, and two pages for all the characters. Finally it’s followed by the usual parts list.

For pocket-money the build (as one would expect) is simple and straightforward. We begin with the beast master who also appears in Beast Master’s Chaos Chariot and comes with a double-sided head print. You attach a brick-built pack to his back with a new element that LEGO have named Backpack W.Hole Ø.4,85. This allows us to attach the two swinging Globlins to him. He also comes with the new shield element that you can swap with different printed shields and a weapon that uses Uni-Kitty’s horn. Once you have built him you then construct the display base that has him sat in the middle with a Force Field shield disc and the other two shield power-ups. In all it took about 10 minutes to put together.

As I like to display my sets a display stand is great and, having now built it, I need to go and test out the app to see how the power-ups work. For now I’ve saved the box and instructions just in case but while the build is short, it has left me wanting to investigate more sets and get others to battle with.

For £6.99 it’s a good little intro into the new theme and will leave kids wanting the app and the larger sets. Be warned – you might need deep pockets!! The parts and printed elements makes this a good set, even if you don’t plan on keeping it built.
