Is LEGO dialling back one of its Super Mario experiments?
The LEGO Group may be dialling back one aspect of its Super Mario range ahead of next month’s launch of 71387 Adventures with Luigi.
Both that Starter Course and last year’s 71360 Adventures with Mario are packaged in what can only be described as a non-standard LEGO box, incorporating strange, non-shelf-friendly angles. That presumably makes them just as tricky to ship in quantity as it does to stack, as anyone who’s tried to save the box from 71360 will be familiar with.
According to just2good, however, the LEGO Group has also created a standard, rectangular box for this summer’s 71387 Adventures with Luigi. The YouTuber tweeted out an image of an eBay listing showing the alternative packaging, although it appears to have since disappeared from the auction website.
Two replies to Justin’s tweet corroborated the existence of the regular box, however, confirming they’d already seen the set on shelves (despite the fact it doesn’t officially launch until August 1). One of those claimed they’d spotted it at Costco, though didn’t specify in which country.
If the box is the real deal, it’ll be interesting to see whether it co-exists with the more unorthodox boxes for 71387 Adventures with Luigi, or whether it’s intended as a long-term replacement for what’s inarguably more awkward packaging – for both retailers and consumers.

- I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
