LEGO Ideas 21329 Fender Stratocaster is a 2-in-1 set

The newly-revealed LEGO Ideas 21329 Fender Stratocaster is actually a 2-in-1 set, including all the bricks you need to build its guitar in either standard black or fiesta red.

Those are the official Fender colourways the LEGO Group’s own palette feels closest to, offering two distinct options for its latest brick-built instrument. It feels completely on point for the company in 2021, too, feeding back not only to its Creator 3-in-1 sets, but also recent swings towards customisation and personalisation, as well as its new pilot program for recoloured sets.

But even more than that, 21329 Fender Stratocaster’s two different body colours are a direct nod to Slovakian fan designer Tomáš Letenay’s original ‘music to our ears’ contest submission, which pitched the guitar in a variety of different colour schemes – from black and dark red to white, dark blue and yellow.

The LEGO Group’s standard red technically wasn’t among those options, but as noted in our review of the upcoming set, it provides a nice contrast with the all-black body (especially if you choose to buy and display two copies of 21329 Fender Stratocaster). And it’s a nice nod to the musicians best known for rocking a fiesta red Strat, including Thin Lizzy’s Gary Moore.

Fiesta red is also the colour of what’s said to be the UK’s first Fender Stratocaster, which was played by The Shadows guitarist Hank Marvin. Given that clear link to British shores, the set’s high UK price tag of £89.99 (compared to $99.99 / €99.99) feels even more difficult to swallow, but that’s a discussion for our review.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
