First LEGO Marvel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness set revealed

The LEGO Group has revealed its first tie-in set for the upcoming Marvel movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – and it’s packed with spoilers.

76205 Gargantos Showdown’s minifigure line-up and packaging not only fully confirms America Chavez (or Miss America) will feature in the sequel, but also gives us our first look at her live-action character, portrayed by Xochitl Gomez. Marvel’s first LGBTQ character to star in a regular comic book series will be joined in the 264-piece set by new versions of Doctor Strange and Wong.

Initial images of 76205 Gargantos Showdown – which will likely be listed on LEGO.com later today – first appeared through the LEGO Building Instructions app, giving us a clear look at all three of those minifigures and the beast they’re duelling. That in itself is a spoiler, because until now we had no confirmation that the sea monster would be part of the Multiverse of Madness.

Gargantos originally debuted in 1969, but hasn’t appeared since 1989, so this is a seriously deep dive into Marvel Comics history for both the new movie and the LEGO Group. Exactly what role the villain will play in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has yet to be revealed, but we’ll find out when the movie hits cinemas in May 2022.

That’s a full four months after 76205 Gargantos Showdown is expected to hit shelves, but the long lead time of this LEGO set is likely down to the film’s recent delay from March 2022.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
