LEGO Marvel 76185 Spider-Man at the Sanctum Workshop review

76185 Spider-Man at the Sanctum Workshop doesn’t need to make sense to be a great LEGO Marvel set.

The close of 2021 has proven to be a busy period for LEGO Marvel releases, if not also a quite unusual one, with a handful of Avengers sets and a mid-sized range of Eternals sets releasing alongside some intriguing Spider-Man sets, including some based around (or at least branded towards) the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Where the Avengers sets offer accurate and immersive revisits of something half the pre-pandemic world saw at the cinema, and Eternals is offering a huge collection of new characters up against some unusual-looking antagonists, the Spider-Man: No Way Home sets strike an interesting balance between the two – characters we know, but in situations that maybe aren’t what they seem. 76185 Spider-Man at the Sanctum Workshop is the perfect example of this.

— Build —

Without the context of having seen Spider-Man: No Way Home, what’s going on in 76185 Spider-Man at the Sanctum Workshop isn’t all that clear, but there are assumptions we can make. The big, green bug-like creature is presumably from another dimension, perhaps unlocked through Doctor Strange’s spell-gone-wrong that we have seen in the No Way Home trailers – a spell which came at the request of a Spider-Man the world now knows as Peter Parker.

Likewise, portals have been a part of the Doctor Strange universe since that character’s first film, and it does appear that one of these is what 76185 Spider-Man at the Sanctum Workshop is based around, taking (as the name suggests) the workshop in Strange’s Sanctum and opening up entry through the wall to another dimension of some sorts.

As a result, we’ve got a very unusual but rather unique LEGO set that, even as we’re not 100% clear on the details, takes an everyday setting and throws in some Marvel character and creativity to make something rather interesting.

It’s not the hardest thing to build – at 355 pieces and minifigure-centric there’s little else to expect – but it does make for a visually interesting and rather play-interactive model that benefits from its concept more than most sets at this size. That’s primarily thanks to the negative space of the portal, which really opens up the scope of the build and adds a fun centre-point that also allows for detail and play both sides of it.

As is the rhetoric around all LEGO Marvel sets, focus falls on the minifigures, and 76185 Spider-Man at the Sanctum Workshop doesn’t try to hide that, instead serving rather well as an open and fun play area for the four that are included to jump around and fight off the big green bug (or, depending on how the film turns out, each other…).

— Characters —

The four minifigures include most notably a new design for Spider-Man and a new cape piece for Doctor Strange. Spider-Man’s look is – as we have come to expect from the LEGO Group in 2021 – spot on, even if some arm printing could have really perfected the final design. Likewise, the cape for Doctor Strange steals the show – it’s not even a minifigure but its shape and texture (a softer plastic) works so perfectly.

Mary-Jane (MJ) and Wong complete an excellent line-up and one of the most complete and well-rounded for a LEGO Marvel set this year.

— Price —

Coming in at £34.99 / $39.99 / €39.99 and offering up a fun set that’s bigger than expected and includes four lead-character minifigures, 76185 Spider-Man at the Sanctum Workshop ticks a lot of boxes for LEGO Marvel fans. It’s a great entry point into the range of sets released (so far) for the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, and packed with enough novelty to more than offer value for money. One not to miss.

— Summary —

76185 Spider-Man at the Sanctum Workshop doesn’t need to explain what’s going to happen in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home film to offer up a fun and engaging little LEGO set packed with four great minifigures of lead Marvel characters. And we say ‘little LEGO set’, but 76185 Spider-Man at the Sanctum Workshop turns out to be a bit bigger than that, offering better-than-expected value for a LEGO Marvel set.

However relevant or accurate it may turn out to be, and indeed how overshadowed it may be by whatever LEGO sets come out for the film after its December release, remains to be seen, but it certainly isn’t one to overlook for either reason.
