It sounds like LEGO Marvel is getting its own modular building series

The latest LEGO Marvel rumours suggest the superhero theme may be getting its own modular building series, starting with last year’s 76178 Daily Bugle.

That building conforms to the size, footprint and format of the wider Modular Buildings Collection, which encompasses sets like 10270 Bookshop, 10278 Police Station and 10297 Boutique Hotel. They can all clip to the towering 76178 Daily Bugle, allowing the Marvel skyscraper to sit happily in your LEGO neighbourhood.

Marvel isn’t the only theme to adopt this approach: NINJAGO did it first, with 70620 NINJAGO City, 70657 NINJAGO City Docks and last year’s 71741 NINJAGO City Gardens, while 80107 Spring Lantern Festival followed suit for the Chinese Traditional Festival range. All those sets can connect in a hodgepodge of architectural styles and themes, if you so choose.

If you’d rather keep your LEGO Marvel sets separate from the rest of your collection, however, 76178 Daily Bugle currently plays a lonely tune. But it might not stay that way for long: according to brand new rumours, 76218 The Sanctum Sanctorum will land in either May or June this year, weighing in at 2,708 pieces for $210.

While there’s no word yet on the exact format that Doctor Strange set might take, it’s really not difficult to imagine it following the modular building standard. That would allow it to connect to 76178 Daily Bugle in what may be a brand new series of annual Marvel modulars, cemented by the fact that 76218 The Sanctum Sanctorum could end up arriving exactly one year after the Bugle.

It’s even easier to envision what that might look like thanks to all the fan-designed Sanctorum builds out there, many of which have adapted 2018’s 76108 Sanctum Sanctorum Showdown into a modular building. We could definitely see the LEGO Group launching something similar in an official capacity for the price point and piece count rumoured for 76218 The Sanctum Sanctorum.

And if we are witnessing the beginnings of a new LEGO Marvel modular building series, there’s plenty of source material for the LEGO Group to mine for years to come, from the Fantastic Four’s Baxter Building and Avengers Tower to – if we’re dreaming big – Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. (You’d just have to throw geographical accuracy to the wind.)

Remember, even 76218 The Sanctum Sanctorum’s very existence is still only a rumour for now – and even if it is true, there’s no guarantee it will follow the template established by 76178 Daily Bugle. But you never know…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
