LEGO Star Wars 75273 Poe Dameron’s X-wing Fighter review

75273 Poe Dameron’s X-wing Fighter takes the best of what has come before to produce an ultimate LEGO Star Wars X-wing model

Price: £89.99 / $89.99 / €99.99 Pieces: 761 Available: December 26 (UK), January 1 (USA)

75273 Poe Dameron’s X-wing Fighter takes the same design structures from 75102 Poe’s X-wing Fighter, 75149 Resistance X-wing Fighter and in particular 75218 X-wing Starfighter and slaps an eye-catching colour scheme across it to create the best LEGO Star Wars set of the January 2020 wave, and the best sequel trilogy X-wing.

All four X-wings released over the past four-and-a-bit years come in at very similar piece counts, around the 700-760 range. Indicative of the LEGO Group having landed on a fantastic design concept for the ship, it’s not surprising, with this latest version coming in with the highest piece count of 761 perhaps reflecting the extra little details in bodywork that have been added.

The LEGO Star Wars design team aren’t redrawing the blueprints to the X-wing Fighter with 75273, merely smartly applying a fantastic colour scheme to an already clearly established and intelligent design that captures the scale, feel and playable actions of the X-wing that make it such an iconic ship in the films and toy in many a child’s hands.

There are subtle changes and upgrades, including extra bodywork detail and contouring along the wings, engine and around the cockpit, whilst the nose has been smoothed out even more. At the same time, whilst borrowing in engine and wing shape from 75102 Poe’s X-wing Fighter and 75149 Resistance X-wing Fighter, it’s the much more fluid and fast wing-opening mechanism from 75218 X-wing Starfighter that has been applied to 75273 Poe Dameron’s X-wing Fighter. Ultimately, this is the smoothest version of the X-wing to date, with the best play feature included and, arguably, the best colour scheme.

Whilst technically moving a little closer to the original trilogy’s all-white-with-red-detailing appearance with that white nose and wings, the angular shaping of the large patch of orange splashed across the cockpit and over the engines – and accented with azure blue – manages to create a wholly unique style. It adds real colour and interest to 75273, elevating it above the original LEGO X-wing for Poe from 2015, at the same time as cleverly managing to capture that blend of modern and classic Star Wars aesthetic.

Poe Dameron included here takes the same design as his minifigure in 2015’s 75102 Poe’s X-wing Fighter, which, with the age of that set in mind, makes its re-use here is more than acceptable. He comes with R2-D2, rather than BB-8, and the very eye-catching pair of another Knight of Ren and Jannah. Both these minifigures look ready for battle and are noteworthy for the once-more-ridiculous levels of detail in their printing, and some respective new, exclusive moulds.

75273 Poe Dameron’s X-wing Fighter is by far the standout set from the latest wave of LEGO Star Wars sets. Whilst it may not re-write the rulebook or even come close to adding a citation, it doesn’t need to. Currently, there’s little to improve upon the LEGO X-wing design, bar the subtle changes in bodywork and detail that have been added here, and the truly awesome colours it has been built in. Throw at least two very desirable minifigures into the equation and this set has everything a LEGO Star Wars set in 2020 should have – fun, design, playability and collectability.
