Children choose classic LEGO box over Super Mario set

In a Christmas toy test that saw children trying out classic and digitally enhanced versions of long-running toys, traditional LEGO bricks were more popular than the Super Mario version.

ITV screened Phillip Schofield’s How To Spend It Well At Christmas last night, which saw children testing out toys in a ‘Classic vs Reboot’ segment. From the LEGO product range, the children tried out Classic 11008 Bricks and Houses and Super Mario 71360 Adventures with Mario Starter Course.

“If you don’t have an iPad or anything to connect it to, it’s not going to work,” one of the children said in reaction to the set.

Of eight children, six preferred the Classic set and two preferred the Super Mario set. The presenter noted that the Starter Course is on the expensive side.

“When I was their age, what I used to build out of LEGO was tv studios,” says Schofield in the show. Thing worked out well for him, given where his career has ended up.

Phillip Schofield’s How To Spend It Well At Christmas is available to watch on the ITV Hub.
