Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi’s 17-year journey to the small screen

More details have now emerged revealing the 17-year long journey to bring Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi to the small screen.

Following the recent trailer for the upcoming Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series on Disney+, Entertainment Weekly has an exclusive feature on the show’s lengthy development. First revealed via its magazine cover featuring Ewan McGregor as the former Jedi Master, EW has even more details to share regarding the new show.

McGregor and fellow returning Star Wars actor Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader) last appeared on screen together 17 years ago in Revenge of the Sith. Rumours of an Obi-Wan Kenobi film had swirled for years, but EW reveals that the less-than-stellar performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story and the later success of The Mandalorian resulted in the project being retooled for Disney+.

The EW feature states that Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi takes place 10 years after the events of Episode III, with the six-episode limited series set to reintroduce the world to not only the fallen Jedi Master but also his failed apprentice. A first look at Christensen as Darth Vader dropped last week and writer Joby Harold gives more insight into what fans can expect from the show.

“The Empire is in the ascendancy,” explains Harold. “All the horrors that come with the Empire are being made manifest throughout the galaxy, so everything that was in the prequels has crumbled. The Jedi order are being all but wiped out, and those Jedi that have survived are on the run and they’re in hiding.”

Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi is due to begin streaming on Disney+ on May 25. No LEGO Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi sets have been revealed to date and the LEGO Group has yet to confirm that any are currently planned for release.
