LEGO Speed Champions 76934 Ferrari F40 is anything but new

A new LEGO Speed Champions Ferrari F40 is coming but this is far from the first brick-built take on the car, officially or unofficially.

As well as the massive 10248 Ferrari F40, the LEGO Group has had a surprising amount of experience with the Ferrari F40 in its various forms. While all eyes are on 76934 Ferrari F40 ahead of August 2024, this isn’t LEGO Speed Champion’s first rodeo with the vehicle.

75890 Ferrari F40 Competizione from 2019 is the theme’s first take on the Ferrari F40, admittedly with the additional body parts that make it the Competizione version of the car. Aside from the wing at the front and the colour change on the spoilers, this version of the Ferrari F40 is visually identical to the standard version.

You wouldn’t guess that from comparing 75890 Ferrari F40 Competizione and 76934 Ferrari F40 though as the shift from six studs of width to eight in the theme’s sets and the creation of new windshield elements has hugely improved the minifigure-scale F40. The two don’t resemble the same vehicle on first glance.

The 2024 model is considerably sleeker and the headlights are an especially massive improvement, now being appropriately close to the ground with a more accurate size. The increased width also means that the minifigure can spit in the right spot too, instead of in the centre of the vehicle.

There’s no doubt that the various changes that have been made to LEGO Speed Champions’ cars have been nothing but good for the Ferrari F40 and you can look forward to picking up the 2024 take on the car in August.

However, the LEGO Group’s five-year wait to cover the car in LEGO Speed Champions again was too long for some enthusiasts, who have taken the task of depicting the Ferrari F40 at eight studs wide into their own hands.

These custom models compare much more favourably to 76934 Ferrari F40 and it wouldn’t be surprising to learn that the LEGO Speed Champions designers have looked at some of these creations for inspiration. Notably, though the technique for the spoiler tends to shift between one of two builds in the custom models, the official 2024 design doubles the length of the spoiler, differing greatly from most custom creations.

The windshield remains the same across the custom models and the official 2024 set while the headlights differ in the final design. Nguyenducanh.dan‘s is arguably closest to 76934 Ferrari F40 as it uses the same technique for the sides of the car.

It’s interesting to see what online enthusiasts have done with the new LEGO Speed Champions scale when recreating the Ferrari F40 following 75890 Ferrari F40 Competizione and at least the rest of us will finally have the opportunity to own a more accurate and affordable LEGO Ferrari F40 later this year.

76934 Ferrari F40 launches on August 1, 2024, but prices have yet to be confirmed after it was initially listed on European retailer Fnac. You can click here to see another upcoming LEGO Speed Champions set that was revealed at the retailer.
