Award #17 – Licensed theme of the year

A week today and it will be Xmas Eve which means we are now in the closing stages of this years awards. Today we pick what we think is the best LEGO theme tied to a 3rd party IP. So, this year as well as Marvel, DC, Disney, Star Wars we also got Scooby-Doo, Jurassic World and all the IPs connected to the new Dimensions range. Do you agree with this year’s pick?

Adam – LEGO Dimensions

Yes it’s a game but the additional sets are a theme in their own right, and how the hell can you beat a theme that features Doctor Who, Wizard of Oz, Back to the Future, Portal, Ghostbusters and many more?!

Luc – Star Wars

The Force has literally awakened for LEGO Star Wars this year; after years of dull re-hashes and clone wars-y sets most of us don’t even know what they are, suddenly there’s sets to get excited about again and they’re making sets that are new or noticeably the best versions of the subject matter to date.

Séb – Scooby-Doo

I didn’t think I would be that bothered when the Scooby sets came out, but actually they far exceeded expectations. Such a timeless cartoon that everyone is familiar with, it managed to fill the void that was left when the popular Monster Fighters theme was retired. A great array of new villainous monsters, a Scooby mould and spooky sets including the iconic Mystery Machine are just what we needed. Not to mention prices starting at the lower level of the price bracket unlike some themes (I’m looking at you Jurassic World). A triumphant success!

Richard – Scooby-Doo

So most of you will know I love Marvel and DC minifigures but hate the sets, so they will never get a vote. With Star Wars I’m on the fence – some stuff I like, other stuff I don’t and as a theme I can take it or leave it. Dimensions is an awesome game with loads of IPs connected to it but as a LEGO theme I can’t say it’s the best. For me – and I was shocked when the theme was first announced –  it’s got to be Scooby-Doo. I loved the Monster Fighters theme and LEGO managed to actually make all the sets bloody decent for a change. I think it was a decent attempt all round and I absolutely love my Mystery Machine.
