Comparing the LEGO Disney Castle sets of new and old

The LEGO Group now has two themed Castle sets for Disney fans to choose from, but between Frozen or a theme park and their comparable prices, which one reigns supreme?

Joining the LEGO Frozen range of models this summer is 43197 The Ice Castle, easily the biggest build from the Disney Princess theme to date but builders will likely know that it is far from the first Disney Castle to be built in bricks.

Nearing its fifth year in production is 71040 Disney Castle, a set that has remained on our Top 20 list for some time. However, with some comparable sizes and prices between the pair and two different themes to them, how can the LEGO Disney castles compare?

That question is exactly what YouTuber Emmasaurus sought to answer in a new video. As you can see by watching above, the size across both is similar, especially in terms of height. Notably, the older 71040 Disney Castle costs £299.99 / $349.99 / €349.99, which is significantly more than 43197 Ice Castle’s cost of £199.99 / $199.99 / €209.99, but still more than enough to warrant a significant amount of detail.

In terms of minifigures, both feature five, with the former featuring characters mostly from the Mickey Mouse cartoons as well as Peter Pan’s Tinkerbell whilst the latter includes most of the Frozen cast. Technically, 71040 Disney Castle also has two knight statue minifigures too, but we’ll focus on the recognisable Disney characters for the sake of comparison.

Comparing their exclusive versions of characters ties the two models as they both feature four minifigures or mini-dolls that can only be found in them.

Overall, it seems that despite the size and price differences, the two are statistically quite comparable. However, their true value will come down to how iconic their respective castle is to builders.

Whereas one has featured in Walt Disney World and at the beginning of many movies for more than 50 years, the other has become a modern icon for younger fans and came from a movie that made $1.28 billion as one of Disney’s highest-grossing films of all time. It all comes down to your preference in the end.

Both 71040 Disney Castle and 43197 Ice Castle are available now from the official online store and if you fancy picking up either, or maybe even both, then you’ll also grab a free Adidas GWP until July 14, or whilst stocks last.
