Designing LEGO 80102 Dragon Dance in pictures

The LEGO Group has shared some images behind the design of the Asia exclusive set 80102 Dragon Dance.

Nicolaas Vas and Niek van Slagmaat are the two LEGO Model Designers who brought 80102 Dragon Dance to life. The set is exclusive to the Asia region as part of the LEGO Group’s push to sell more products in previously untapped markets such as China.

Members of the China marketing team helped Nicolaas and Niek to design the set. The duo each added specific aspects to the model, with the four small animals coming from Nicolaas and Niel selecting flame yellow/orange.
Capturing the dancing motion was the biggest challenge when designing the set.

Crystal Fontan was responsible for set’s graphic design, trying out different pattern designs to see what would work. While the image above shows a function test, the images below are a mix of early versions of the models, function tests and graphic options.

“As a mission-driven business, we are committed to inspiring and developing children through creative play and learning. We are excited to announce these major launches for China at the CIIE, and our commitment to this strategic growth market and goals to provide the creative LEGO play experience to the hands of more Chinese children remain unchanged,” said CEO Niels B. Christiansen when the set was announced.
