Don’t worry: LEGO 71040 The Disney Castle isn’t going anywhere just yet

If rumours of a new microscale Disney Castle have you worried about the status of the LEGO Group’s other ode to Magic Kingdom, don’t fret: 71040 The Disney Castle isn’t going anywhere.

According to Brick Fanatics’ sources, the huge, 4,080-piece tribute to the House of Mouse will remain on sale until at least the end of 2022. That means if the rumoured microscale version does materialise later this year (or even next year), both models will sit side-by-side on shelves.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though, because the two sets should fill very different needs in the market. If you want the ultimate Disney Castle – populated by minifigures including Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Tinkerbell – then you should aim for the larger, £299.99 / $349.99 / €349.99 set.

But if you don’t have the space for that model, or would simply prefer a more subtle display of your affection for Disney World, the alleged microscale version should be right up your street. According to the original source of the rumour, the set will contain somewhere between 500 and 800 pieces and retail for $50.

That’s far more accessible than 71040 The Disney Castle, even if it won’t match the scale and grandeur of that 2016 set. But it’s also clear from that comparison why both sets could happily continue to co-exist – for now, anyway.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
