E.T. phones home via LEGO Ideas as Spielberg-inspired build reaches 2023 review
A LEGO movie poster celebrating E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is phoning home via LEGO Ideas, as the brick-built one-sheet has racked up 10,000 votes to reach the first 2023 review.
The framed piece – which calls to mind 21333 Vincent van Gogh – The Starry Night in presentation – is LEGO Ideas veteran Marcos Garavelli’s eighth project to amass 10,000 votes, following The Meeting Point, The Art Center and Brick Walk (to name a few). To date, however, none of those have been given the green light by the LEGO Ideas review board.
Garavelli will be hoping the winds of fate change direction for E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, which recreates one of the Steven Spielberg film’s most iconic moments, when Elliot and E.T. fly to the forest in front of an enormous full moon. The build specifically apes a poster designed by B.D. Fox Independent, which was originally created for the movie’s cast and crew.
“On June 1982, this film was released and quickly became the highest grossing in history, even surpassing Star Wars at that moment,” Garavelli writes on the project page. “I was just five years old, so I grew up with E.T. in my mind all my childhood. Now I’m 45, and I still enjoy watching the film with my kids every year.
“The filmmakers reconsidered from this film, the way of making films for children, adventure films for children and young people. The influence that the story of E.T. and the work their director has had on several generations of filmmakers is obvious, especially in the children’s entertainment market.”
Now that the project has racked up the necessary 10,000 votes to progress to the first 2023 review, the LEGO Ideas team must decide whether to produce it as an official set. We’ll find out their decision later this year, likely around October – but there’s still plenty of time left for more projects to join this review stage, the qualifying window for which will close in early May.
For now, here’s how the first 2023 review is shaping up so far…

- I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
