Every LEGO Technic set retiring in 2021 and beyond – August update

The largest LEGO Technic set of all time and the company’s second modern supercar are both due to retire in 2021, while last year’s Lambo will be on shelves until at least 2023.

Those are the headlines from the full list of LEGO Technic sets retiring over the next three years, according to Brick Fanatics’ sources. The 4,108-piece 42100 Liebherr R 9800 Excavator launched just under two years ago, but – if rumours are to be believed – will soon be replaced by an almost-as-large flagship set.

42083 Bugatti Chiron will also join its predecessor 42056 Porsche 911 GT3 RS in the LEGO retirement home, leaving 42115 Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 (review) as the only LEGO Technic supercar at the top end of the price spectrum currently on shelves. Given they’ve so far launched in two-year intervals, expect to see another one join the line-up in 2022.

The majority of 2021’s sets will only hang around until the end of 2022, meanwhile, with the exception of 42125 Ferrari 488 GTE AF Corse #51 (review) and the newly-launched 42128 Heavy-duty Tow Truck and 42129 4×4 Mercedes-Benz Zetros Trial Truck, all of which will persist into 2023.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
