LEGO Creator Expert 10298 Vespa 125 officially revealed

The LEGO Group’s latest Creator Expert vehicle is racing on to store shelves straight from Italy in 10298 Vespa 125.

Inspired by the 1960s model of the iconic scooter, 10298 Vespa 125 includes 1,106 pieces and will be available to purchase from LEGO.com and LEGO Stores from March 1. Cast in cool light blue – the same colour as last year’s 77942 Fiat 500 redux – the LEGO Vespa reflects one of the real-life vehicle’s earliest hues.

Given the minimal frame involved in a scooter compared to, say, a Ford Mustang or Porsche 911, the LEGO Group has padded out the build with appropriate accessories, including a helmet, basket and even a bouquet of flowers. There’s also a spare wheel, removable engine cover, kickstand and working steering.

“Working with the Vespa team to create this stunning automotive masterpiece was an incredible experience,” said LEGO Senior Designer Florian Müller. “Recreating the details of the original model to celebrate the classic 1960’s Vespa was one of my favourite parts of designing this set. The set offered me a chance to step back in time and let my imagination flow while designing, and we hope the experience is the same for fans.”

“Working with the LEGO Group was an extraordinary experience, because it brought two dreams – the LEGO brand and Vespa – together, which have the unlimited expressive potential that they offer their fans in common,” added Marco Lambri, Head of the Piaggio Design Group Centre.

“[These are] two outstanding brands able to span different ages, always able to reinvent themselves because they have the capacity to unite and to build in their DNA. As designers, the challenge was to have the soft shapes of Vespa co-exist with the form of LEGO bricks – a challenge I believe we met with flying colours.”

10298 Vespa 125 measures 22cm tall, 12cm long and 35cm wide, and launches March 1 for £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99. Look out for our review soon.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
