Original LEGO Star Wars design sketch reveals alternate logo

LEGO Star Wars is possibly the most iconic theme within the company, but the recognisable emblem for the range once looked a little different.

Originally released in 1999, LEGO Star Wars has become a regular part of the LEGO Group, with hundreds of models dedicated to the franchise from a galaxy far, far away. 22 years after the theme was first released, the initial concept logo has now been revealed.

LEGO designer Samuel Johnson has taken to Twitter to showcase the first sketch of what would eventually become the theme’s first logo, which would feature yellow-skinned versions of characters from the original trilogy and a certain moon-shaped space station in the background.

Compared to the final design, LEGO Star Wars’ original logo looked very similar with characters in the same place and the golden text placed underneath. However, this first drawing also suggested featuring the LEGO and System emblems, which were dropped from the final design.

Also removed was a pair of familiar faces in C-3PO and what could be an older Obi-Wan Kenobi, but it’s not immediately clear from the sketch. The Millenium Falcon, X-Wings, and a TIE Fighter can also be seen flying away from the Death Star, which was notably smaller in the original design.

Another subtle change that was made before release was the addition of Darth Vader’s lightsaber instead of having Luke Skywalker’s weapon being the only one held aloft. These smaller details eventually made for a simpler logo that would be plastered on LEGO Star Wars sets until 2001.
