LEGO 10283 NASA Space Shuttle Discovery’s concept model was designed in just one day

The designer behind LEGO 10283 NASA Space Shuttle Discovery says the set’s original concept model was assembled in a single day.

Speaking exclusively to Brick Fanatics, Milan Madge revealed that the LEGO Group’s latest real-life space set was initially mocked up by Mike Psiaki – designer of 92176 NASA Apollo Saturn V – during one of the company’s monthly free-build days.

“Every last Friday of the month, we’re able to take the day to do our own creative projects and explore stuff we’d like to see,” Milan explained. “That was one of his models that he just knocked up in one day, as he does with a lot of stuff.”

Perhaps even more surprising than how quickly the concept for 10283 NASA Space Shuttle Discovery came together, though, is just how long ago it happened.

“I can’t remember when exactly, but it was a few years ago now,” Milan continued. “It’s been around the office for a while. And we were kind of pushing to do it every year, and we knew that the 40th anniversary was going to come up this year, so we kind of had it in our back pocket. We’ve been waiting for that right moment to bring it out.”

That right moment was April 1, which – as we’ll touch on in a future story – really couldn’t have been timed better for the particular focus of 10283 NASA Space Shuttle Discovery.
