LEGO 10289 Bird of Paradise designer video explores the set’s roots

The latest addition to the LEGO Botanical Collection has received its own dedicated designer video, getting to the root of the build’s development.

10289 Bird of Paradise has only just released on the official online store, and to support the launch of the new Botanical Collection build, the LEGO Group took the time to speak to its designer for some fresh insight.

You can watch the video for yourself below, with designer Chris McVeigh on hand to explain how the set went from plant to product and explain why this model is ideal for those in colder climates.

Chris takes builders through the inspiration from the real-life plant, including that the set is purposefully smaller than the actual flower for display purposes. Elements of the design are discussed too, such as that the pot features eight golden rings that avoid the need to builders to align the separate parts exactly right on the octagonal structure. This also makes 10289 Bird of Paradise a record-breaking set with the most gold rings in a single model.

“I am not very green-fingered and I think that is why this project spoke to me,” says designer Chris McVeigh. “I am not able to keep a plant alive, I have tried, it is just not for me so something like this is completely my speed”
