Five swashbuckling LEGO companions to 40566 Ray the Castaway

As October approaches, we’ve highlighted five LEGO sets that’ll help you secure the newest promotional item.

An unexpected highlight of the LEGO Ideas theme is small promotional items, produced via a range of competitions. These encourage users to design smaller LEGO models, which are then included with LEGO.com purchases over a certain threshold. The latest of these is 40566 Ray the Castaway, which depicts a small desert island – and an inhabitant in need of rescue.

Since this set (which is available on October 1) has a rather high price threshold of £120 / $120 / €120, we’ve picked out a few thematically appropriate sets which will help you secure it.

5 – 31109 Pirate Ship

This fearsome vessel appears in the Creator 3-in-1 line, and offers a very respectable build for LEGO pirates fans. 31109 Pirate Ship boasts an entirely brick-built design (i.e. no pre-moulded hull elements) and can be rebuilt into an inn – or even a second island.

Since this set has seen a price increase, (bringing its RRP to £114.99 / $119.99 / €129.99) it gets you within reach of the threshold for 40566 Ray the Castaway. That should in turn help to make this set a little more appealing.

4 – 71747 The Keepers’ Village

If you’re looking for another island, 71747 The Keepers’ Village is a great option. This set hails from the NINJAGO line and offers a small island with decidedly hostile inhabitants. The build offers a pair of booby traps and a jail cell for any unwelcome visitors. We’re sure they’re just misunderstood, however.

At £44.99 / $49.99 / €49.99, this should also help you close the gap to Ray. Of course, since it’s scheduled for retirement this year you may want to grab it regardless.

3 – 31130 Sunken Treasure Mission

There’s actually a couple of undersea LEGO sets in the Creator 3-in-1 line at the moment, but this is probably the strongest. In its default build, 31130 Sunken Treasure Mission depicts an octopus, a submarine and a safe. However, it can be rebuilt into a lobster or a manta ray – complete with coral reef. The set clearly rewards multiple purchases, with an RRP of £24.99 / $34.99 / €29.99 for each copy of the set.

2 – 80037 Dragon of the East

Depending on where Ray’s been washed up, you may find some other colourful characters. A vibrant entry in the Monkie Kid theme, 80037 Dragon of the East includes an underwater dragon mech and some underwater scenery. At £54.99 / $79.99 / €59.99 it’s not quite an impulse buy, although it is one of the theme’s more reasonably priced sets.

1 – 60343 Rescue Helicopter Transport

When you’re ready to bring Ray home, this set may be the perfect way to do so. 60343 Rescue Helicopter Transport offers an ambulance helicopter and a truck to transport it over land. It also features the new chartreuse shade the LEGO Group has recently introduced, ensuring it’ll stand out in any LEGO collection. You can grab it for £24.99 / $29.99 / €29.99.

40566 Ray the Castaway will be available at LEGO.com from October 1 to October 13. Of course, you may want to wait for 10308 Holiday Main Street or 75331 The Razor Crest instead. Both of these are available to LEGO VIP members from October 3, and to non-VIPs on October 7.
