LEGO BrickHeadz 40623 Battle of Endor Heroes review

As the smallest of the LEGO Star Wars 40th-anniversary sets for Return of the Jedi, 40623 Battle of Endor Heroes isn’t the best birthday build – but it might just be the best BrickHeadz.

40623 Battle of Endor Heroes is a small part of the LEGO Group’s larger celebrations for the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi. However, while it’s a significant entry in LEGO BrickHeadz, it’s not quite as impressive as the other models: 75352 Emperor’s Throne Room Diorama, 75353 Endor Speeder Chase Diorama and 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer.

That said, it’s undoubtedly one of the best LEGO Star Wars BrickHeadz packs ever released, including several iconic characters – some of which are making their BrickHeadz debut.

LEGO BrickHeadz sets don’t tend to be widely released apart from a select few exceptions, so you should only expect to find 40623 Battle of Endor Heroes on the official online store and in physical LEGO shops. It arrived just in time for Star Wars Day in 2023, priced at £39.99 / $39.99 / €39.99.

Featuring five BrickHeadz – two smaller and three larger figures – 40623 Battle of Endor Heroes includes some of the cast that took part in the battle from on and above the forest moon. LEGO BrickHeadz have a formulaic, uniform design and for the most part, that remains unchanged here.

Both Luke and Leia are featured in their Endor outfits, with Luke’s figure being one of his most recognisable costumes, despite how ultimately simple it is. A pair of prints between them complete the figures and the duo are good interpretations of the characters, though Leia is a little harder to recognise as the character rather than a soldier in Endor garb. That’s down to the simplistic nature of BrickHeadz, leaving out details that could have set her apart, unfortunately by design.

Luke’s included lightsaber accessory is an appreciated inclusion but we were left confused by Leia’s cookie, at least until rewatching Return of the Jedi. This accessory is meant to represent the snack that Leia uses to coerce Wicket into being allies and it’s a great callback. We’ve come around to the accessory, now preferring the inclusion of the cookie over a blaster or any other accessory.

Lando stands out more than Luke and Leia thanks to the included cape, which helps provide additional support when displaying him off the provided stand. The hair is nicely textured and he’s easily the most interesting of the three standard figures. However, he doesn’t quite live up to the two smaller figures.

LEGO 40623 Battle of Endor Heroes marks the BrickHeadz debut of Lando Calrissian, R2-D2 and Wicket with the latter two featuring as more interesting, smaller figures.

R2-D2 is a highlight of the new set with a combination of a unique astromech design and drum-lacquered silver elements perfectly capturing the look of the character, even without considering the printed element for the body. This may be one of the best LEGO BrickHeadz figures ever released, though he feels lonely without C-3PO.

Wicket follows the same design formula as previous small LEGO BrickHeadz figures, but the bright hood and furry appearance combine nicely with the chibi style of the figure. Wicket’s BrickHeadz is the most adorable in 40623 Battle of Endor Heroes and possibly the entire theme. The inclusion of a spear represents the character’s ferocious side too. Unfortunately, you’ll need to reattach the legs every time you remove Wicket from the display stand as they stick to the stand rather than his body.

As a specific character selection, the mix in 40623 Battle of Endor Heroes works pretty well. It’s a diverse bunch, offering a spread of styles and building techniques – but does mean we’re missing a few notable characters from Return of the Jedi, including Han Solo and C-3PO. A seven-pack might have been stretching what customers are willing to pay for a LEGO BrickHeadz set, though…

— LEGO BrickHeadz 40623 Battle of Endor Heroes price —

LEGO BrickHeadz 40623 Battle of Endor Heroes is launching on May 1, 2023, for £39.99 / $39.99 / €39.99 and this feels completely fair for both the number of pieces and volume of the finished builds.

Valuing Luke, Leia and Lando at £9.99 / $9.99 / €9.99 each, as single BrickHeadz usually retail for, both Wicket and R2-D2 are well worth the combined price, offering good value as a pack of five. However, this is also the only LEGO Star Wars Return of the Jedi anniversary set to not include the printed emblem element and there’s no reason why it couldn’t have been featured as part of one of the stands, or separately.

The 40th-anniversary printed piece in 75352 Emperor’s Throne Room Diorama, not included in 40623 Battle of Endor Heroes.

Its omission doesn’t draw away from the value compared to other BrickHeadz sets, but when stacked up next to the other three anniversary models, it’s an oversight that can’t be ignored, lowering the appeal comparatively.

— LEGO BrickHeadz 40623 Battle of Endor Heroes pros and cons —

Despite a few downsides, 40623 Battle of Endor Heroes is our current favourite of the LEGO Star Wars BrickHeadz sets, thanks in no small part to the eye-catching and exclusive R2-D2 and Wicket figures.

R2-D2 is especially interesting with the inclusion of drum-lacquered elements, now we just need to see C-3PO get the same treatment. While it stacks up well next to other BrickHeadz entries, it’s not quite as interesting as the rest of the 40th-anniversary models for Return of the Jedi due to the lack of a printed emblem brick.

For a BrickHeadz enthusiast, we wholeheartedly recommend 40623 Battle of Endor Heroes – but you might want to consider picking up another build to specifically celebrate the anniversary of Return of Jedi.
