LEGO wants to ‘add more’ movie cars and vehicles to Speed Champions

LEGO Speed Champions’ Design Manager says the James Bond and Fast & Furious cars could be the start of a new collection – but it all depends on how well they’re received.

Speed Champions is breaking its established single-wave cycle next month with the addition of two new cars to its roster, each based on a specific movie vehicle: 76911 007 Aston Martin DB5 and 76912 Fast & Furious 1970 Dodge Charger R/T. Both sets come with a minifigure, in Daniel Craig’s James Bond and Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto respectively.

It’s a brave new world for a theme historically focused on generic versions of supercars, hypercars, concept cars and classic cars, but according to LEGO Speed Champions Design Manager Chris Stamp, these sets aren’t intended to be a distinct and separate subtheme.

“To be honest, it’s just an extension of the overall LEGO Speed Champions theme and by that I mean an eight-module wide IP vehicle collection,” Chris told New Elementary. Does that mean we won’t see more unorthodox vehicles from movies – which we wouldn’t normally see in Speed Champions anyway – such as the A-Team van?

“I don’t want to exclude any vehicles,” Chris said. “Although, I tend to think it is essentially a vehicle collection – but that’s not all it could be! If the fans like these iconic movie and TV vehicles and the sets are well received, then we will probably add more to the collection.”

The future of LEGO Speed Champions in 2023 and beyond will therefore seemingly be shaped by the reception to 76911 007 Aston Martin DB5 and 76912 Fast & Furious 1970 Dodge Charger R/T. You’ll be able to check them out for yourself from August 1, when they’ll both launch at LEGO.com for £19.99 / $24.99 / €24.99 apiece.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
