LEGO announces plans for new solar park at Billund HQ

In a solid effort to invest in renewable and sustainable energy, the LEGO Group has revealed plans for an 80-100 MW solar park in Billund, Denmark at its headquarters.

If approved by the municipality of Denmark, the LEGO Group aims to have the park – which is intended to cover 100% of the company’s energy consumption in Billund – ready by late 2026. Tim Brooks, the VP of Environmental Responsibility at the LEGO Group stated: “We also plan to create a green space that the local community can use and enjoy – and where families can come together to play and learn.

“To make the process as inclusive and transparent as possible, we hope to develop the park’s design in close dialogue with neighbours – and the local community in general.”

The proposal aims to support the natural surroundings of the headquarters through the planting of new trees, as well as making the area a destination that families can visit in order to learn more about preserving nature through play. The plans intend to put in trail systems around the headquarters, alongside recreational areas where children can learn more about being environmentally friendly.

By making a space where people can come together to understand more about the importance of renewable energy and preserving our world for future generations, the LEGO Group aims to support covering its own energy consumption while keeping a focus on, as Brooks went on to add, making: ‘a better world for our children to inherit.’

Plans have also recently been put forward to build solar parks not only in Billund but also at the newer LEGO Group factories, such as those in Vietnam and the United States.
