How do the LEGO Avatar creatures compare to the source material?

A second Avatar: The Way of Water trailer has revealed closer looks at many of the creatures that the LEGO Group has recreated for the second wave of LEGO Avatar sets.

Whether you love them or hate them, you can’t deny that the Avatar movies introduce a number of unusual-looking creatures. It’s the perfect opportunity for the LEGO designers to let their creative juices flow for some unique builds.

75579 Payakan the Tulkun & Crabsuit includes a posable Tulkun, but the proportions are quite different to the film. Sully can grab on to an enormous fin, whereas the brick-built Tulkun has quite stubby fins on its side. We do like the use of four pieces to recreate the demogorgon-style mouth, however.

Still, we can’t complain too much. 75576 Skimwing Adventure includes a very faithful version of the skimwing, with impressively detailed printing on the wings and head. Similarly, 75575 Ilu Discovery has some gorgeous designs on the fins of the posable ilu, offering more detail than the second trailer does of what these aquatic creatures look like.

It looks like the majority of the detail on the sets is printed as well, rather than given via stickers. That offers that extra level of detail and precision (as well as removing what many see as a frustrating part of the building process from the equation).

A large part of the appeal of the Avatar films is the fantastical creatures and stunning settings. While this can be hard to recreate in plastic brick format as opposed to CGI on a cinematic screen, we think the LEGO Group has done a fairly good job, judging from the look of the trailers so far.

Of course, the glowing underwater pink coral is virtually impossible to recreate in real life, but including so many different colours and bright splashes of different shades of pink and blue in the aquatic sets goes a long way to giving a sense of how the film looks.

Avatar: The Way of Water will be available to watch in cinemas on December 16, while the second wave of LEGO Avatar sets will launch on January 1, 2023. That means we’ll have to wait until then to compare the source material to the sets in more detail, but for now, it looks like they’ve done a fairly good job.
