LEGO Bits N’ Bricks podcast explores the most downloaded LEGO app

A new episode of the official LEGO Games Podcast is now live, discussing the most downloaded LEGO app in history and why it was made.

The third season of Bits N’ Bricks is continuing with another instalment themed to a pair of LEGO Games available as apps. Hosts Ethan Vincent and Brian Crecente are joined by Emmet O’Neill of StoryToys, a company that the LEGO Group partnered with for the creation of LEGO DUPLO World.

“Fundamentally, children are learning all of the time. So how do you control and influence that kid so that what they are learning is positive, rather than negative?”

“How do you make that child’s experience be a positive and fun experience that allows the child to build and grow? That’s at the heart of it. That’s the starting point,” said Emmet O’Neill, CEO of StoryToys.

“We’ve made a lot of really good apps. But I was really, really proud of this. We kind of poured our hearts and souls into it. And it came out, and nothing happened,”

“Nobody downloaded it. And none of the kind of big review sites picked up on it. And it received very muted featuring from the app stores. I think I probably came as close to leaving the app space as I have in 10 years. I was really, really disillusioned and upset.”

Whilst LEGO DUPLO World would eventually go on to have over 20 million downloads and win awards, that still would not posit it as the most downloaded app based on the plastic bricks of all time. That title belongs to LEGO Juniors Create & Cruise which has been revealed to have over 200 million downloads under its belt.

You can listen to the full episode by clicking the video above, but if the games discussed don’t appeal to you, with them being aimed at a younger audience, there are plenty of other instalments to tune in to. From the return of LEGO Star Wars Battles to the inner workings of the latest LEGO Games studio, there are three seasons worth of episodes on offer.
