LEGO Classic 2022 sets revealed, including new baseplates

Images of seven new LEGO Classic sets launching in 2022 have landed online, giving us our first glimpse at the refreshed range of baseplates.

Curiously, the images published by online retailer JB Spielwaren seem to suggest that each of the four baseplates – in green, grey, blue and white – will still come in plastic packaging, rather than the paper packaging previously confirmed by the LEGO Group.

That’s because they still have a transparent section displaying the contents of each package, and see-through paper doesn’t seem to be a thing just yet. On the other hand, it’s possible that the packaging actually uses a combination of paper and plastic, which would at least be a step towards the sustainability the LEGO Group is reaching for.

The new baseplates are numbered 11023 through 11026, and save for their new product numbers and (potentially) new packaging, they’re unremarkable in all the best ways – which is to say that their consistency with the previous range is appreciated, given fears last year that the company would retire its baseplates altogether with the advent of its new LEGO CITY road plates.

Expect the new baseplates to be available from March 1, 2022, at €8.99 apiece for the 32×32-stud green, white and blue plates, and €14.99 for the 48×48-stud grey plate. UK and US prices are yet to be confirmed.

JB Spielwaren has also revealed three more new LEGO Classic sets, which each include a mix of colourful elements to inspire original building in a more direct way than the rest of the LEGO Group’s portfolio. 11017 Creative Monsters includes 140 standard bricks for €9.99; 11018 Creative Ocean Fun bumps that up to 333 pieces for €19.99; and 11019 Bricks and Functions includes 500 pieces for €29.99.

That last set is probably the most interesting of the bunch, because it packs in a mix of traditional System bricks and gears, axles and wheels to encourage incorporating functions into your builds. All three LEGO Classic sets also include an ideas booklet to help budding builders get started. As with the baseplates, expect them to launch March 1 online and in-store.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
