LEGO Creator 40651 Australia Postcard criticised as ‘random sh**hole’

LEGO Creator 40651 Australia Postcard hasn’t gone down well with some Australians, with criticism levelled at the generic imagery on the set.

As one of several country-themed LEGO Creator sets, each Postcard contains significant landmarks. 40569 London Postcard features Big Ben and the London Eye, while 40568 Paris Postcard includes the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. However, 40651 Australia Postcard is based around more generic sights, as has become quickly apparent since its reveal.

Instead of specific buildings or natural landmarks, 40651 focuses on general life in the outback, with brick-built images of a eucalyptus tree, a cockatoo, and a kangaroo road sign. In addition, while other postcards focus on a single city, the plaque for this model simply reads ‘Australia’.

Australian Reddit users were quick to point out the discrepancy, with u/okkolegauposledzony posting photo comparisons of the LEGO Creator Postcard sets under the caption: ‘Every LEGO postcard set has some iconic landmarks for each city and then Australia is just a random sh*thole.’

Other users were quick to agree, with the post gaining almost 9,000 upvotes within two days at the time of writing. PJDiddy1 pointed out that, even if the outback was the focus of the set, there were still other options for what to include, commenting: ‘Could have at least put Uluru in the background if this is the choice of scene.’

“Didn’t even get a specific city like the rest of them, it’s just ‘Australia,'” wrote another Reddit user, u/Laeif.

The criticisms do bear some weight, with clear differences between 40651 and the other LEGO Creator Postcard sets. Considering Australia is an enormous country with a rich history and culture, it does seem reductive to reduce the entire country to one snapshot of the outback. Perhaps the LEGO Group will one day introduce a more specific Postcard model for Australia but, for now, 40651 is all the country has.
