LEGO Design VP comments on ‘complicated’ issue of Pinocchio’s nose in 71038 Disney 100

Vice President of Design at the LEGO Group Matthew Ashton tweeted about how ‘complicated’ one element of 71038 Disney 100 was to make.

The latest collection of Disney CMFs released to celebrate the brand’s 100th anniversary feature a number of new elements, ranging from head and hairpieces to Baxymax’s larger-than-life arms. One such character who got a new head mould was Pinnochio, featuring a protruding nose, in keeping with his ever-lengthening nose that gives him away when he’s lying.

Matthew Ashton answered a number of questions about 71038 Disney 100 on Twitter, including one asking: “How many meetings did you have to hold to get permission for Pinocchio to have a nose?”

In response, Matthew tweeted back: “You would not believe how complicated that was:/”.

While this is likely somewhat tongue-in-cheek, it’s no secret that the LEGO Group has rigorous standards and requirements for new elements to pass its quality standards. We’ll likely never know what exactly went into the creation of even something as small as Pinocchio’s nose, but we can only imagine that the LEGO Group has been working on the minifigure’s snout for a long time. Add in the extra steps that are always required when working with a separate franchise like Disney and you’ve got a time-consuming project on your hands!
