LEGO Disney 2023 is making an eye-catching design change

The LEGO Disney theme already has a variety of new sets for LEGO fans next year, with its minidoll characters getting a bit of a makeover.

The LEGO Disney theme has grown into a perennial part of the LEGO lineup, with new sets appearing under the Disney theme for some time now. 2023 has already promised us four new LEGO Disney sets – although past rumours indicate that more LEGO Disney sets will be coming. Since 2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the Walt Disney Company, more LEGO sets are perhaps to be expected.

For now, we’ve got some more Disney Princess (and princess-esque, in Moana’s case) sets to enjoy. Rapunzel, Moana, Aurora, Cinderella and Jasmine are up for grabs this time, as well as new characters like Sleeping Beauty’s Prince Philip. However, long-time LEGO Disney fans may find the new eyes on the minidolls a little unexpected.

That’s because these eyes are larger and cartoonier than before, lending each LEGO Disney character a slightly more exaggerated appearance. It’s a noticeable shift from the LEGO Disney characters we’ve been previously getting, which offered a design more in line with the LEGO Friends theme.

That said, LEGO Disney design shifts are surprisingly commonplace compared to other licensed themes. Rapunzel’s minidolls are a good example of this idea; she appeared in minidoll form at the start of the current Disney theme, and her subsequent appearances demonstrate how broader Disney designs have evolved.

Early LEGO Disney minidolls offered relatively generic expressions; while clothing and hairstyle varied, the faces themselves often had little to differentiate them. That shifted towards the end of the ‘10s, with Disney minidolls gaining more expressions, more detailed (if still relatively realistic) eyes and other details such as freckles.

Sets like 43214 Twirling Rapunzel, then, are very much the next logical step – although it does reinforce that these LEGO sets are squarely aimed at the younger LEGO fan. You can check out official images for the four new LEGO Disney sets now for a better look at the new designs, and buy them all at LEGO.com from January 1, 2023.
