LEGO is donating MRI scanner models to hospitals to help calm children

The LEGO Group is donating model MRI scanners to hospitals to explain the process to kids, and the exclusive build has been showcased online.

Fraser Lovatt, an employee of the LEGO Group, has taken to Twitter to share more about the exclusive build and the story behind it. The creation isn’t available for sale and the instructions won’t be accessible online, but photos of the construction process have been revealed.

The model uses a mix of white, grey and blue bricks to mirror the hospital setting and help familiarise younger patients with the process ahead of them. The build is split into two rooms, one continuing the MRI scanner and another for staff to stay and monitor the patient.

An image later in the Twitter thread shows how the LEGO MRI scanner can open up to reveal the internal machinery to children and help them understand what is going to happen, and stop them from worrying about the process.

The employee reveals that a fellow worker at the LEGO Group, Erik Ullerlund Staehr, came up with the idea for the model and that the LEGO Group is now tasking employees worldwide to build the exclusive sets and donate them to a local hospital.

Back in 2020, a LEGO Ideas project proposing an official set for a different type of MRI scanner was pitched on the platform but was not approved in the review stage.

PLEASE put the instructions for this build online for children or parents or even hospitals to build their own. A suggested donation going to a non profit foundation to purchase real MRI machines or LEGO sets for hospitals could be the beneficiary. This could be more quickly set up than waiting for additional medical/MRI LEGO sets to be produced. LEGO could do a whole series like this.

These are such a great product and the impact they will have is going to be huge! Is there any way that imaging facilities can request one? I would love to further support this project!

    Hi
The paediatric wards at Bedford & Luton hospitals England, would really benefit from having one of these (at each site) to help take the anxiety out of the procedure of having an an MRI, which many children face.

    How do we get sets?

    Kind Regards

Hi, as a neurologist who sees many paediatric neurology patients, I love the idea to have such a set in our hospital: beam/brick it up to Geel, Belgium please Scotty!

And please consider ‘The next Lego movie’: ‘Lego heroes in the hospital’!
So children can watch the movie waiting for their scan.

    I can’t wait…

I truly love the idea of the MRI scanner machine. Recently I went for my MRI and I was scared and unsure. I can send what I wrote on my experience.
I think a children’s story book can be fun to go along with the MRI lego set. I am a writer and a children’s author and have participated in writing books for 0 to 3 years and 3 to 5 years old funded by Lego in Bangladesh.. Please let me know if I can write again. I now live in Auckland, New Zealand.

    Hi,
A new wing is being added to our hospital which includes a MRI scanner (GE) model, we’ve been currently running our MRI for years from an attached trailer with wheels but this new MRI will have a home inside the hospital which will also include a new reception area for patients. I can picture a LEGO model being a showcase as all including children that walk in to our facility.
It would be an honor for our facility to be selected in receiving one of these designs.
Many children & adults would have a chance to visually see this model as presented through the waiting room & I find that as a great opportunity to promote & explain such
    An amazing technology. Thanks

        Beste,
