LEGO Education unveils SPIKE Prime

As the LEGO Group continues to innovate with products that combine physical and digital play, LEGO Education has launched SPIKE Prime.

SPIKE Prime is the newest hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) product, unveiled today by LEGO Education. It brings together LEGO bricks and a programmable Hub with sensors and motors. An app works with the hub to allow children to build programs, containing lessons that have been designed to fit within the classroom.

Each SPIKE Prime kit contains 523 pieces, which can build various creations that are part of an educational framework designed to fit within educational frameworks. To highlight the importance that LEGO Education attached to hands-on learning, the company has commissioned research that reveals that 87% of students say they learn topics better through hands-on learning and 93% of parents believe hands-on learning helps children retain knowledge better.

Along with SPIKE Prime, LEGO Education has developed a Confidence in Learning toolkit to provide workshops for schools and help teachers incorporate hands-on STEAM learning into the classroom.

“We are seeing a challenge globally in middle school children, typically aged 11-14. At that age, children start losing their confidence in learning,” explained Esben Stærk Jørgensen, President of LEGO Education. “The Confidence Poll data shows that most students say if they failed at something once, they don’t want to try again. With SPIKE Prime and the lessons featured in the SPIKE app, these children will be inspired to experiment with different solutions, try new things and ultimately become more confident learners. And for teachers, time is the ultimate barrier. The lesson plans, resources and models make it so easy for teachers to integrate SPIKE Prime into the classroom.”

As part of the SPIKE Prime launch, the LEGO Group has developed 11 new elements including an integrator brick, designed to provide an easy connection between Technic and typical System pieces.

LEGO Education SPIKE Prime will launch in August, in time for the new academic year.
