LEGO Harry Potter 71043 Hogwarts Castle retirement delayed

The LEGO Group has postponed the scheduled retirement of 71043 Hogwarts Castle, which was originally due to leave shelves by the end of 2022.

Proof positive – if you needed it – that retirement dates are generally always in flux, the largest LEGO Harry Potter set to date (though it may soon be surpassed, if recent rumours are true) will no longer exit production within the next eight months, as once planned. That’s according to Brick Fanatics’ sources, which state that 71043 Hogwarts Castle will now retire by the end of 2024 instead.

That’s great news for anyone currently saving up to buy the 6,020-piece microscale model before it’s too late, as you’ve now got two more years to pull together the funds. And given the price tag 71043 Hogwarts Castle commands, that’s probably a welcome relief: it retails for £369.99 in the UK, $399.99 in the US and €419.99 across Europe.

First released in 2018 alongside the initial wave of Wizarding World sets, the ultimate LEGO Hogwarts model will now be available for a minimum of six years (pending any other changes to its retirement date), which ranks it pretty highly among the LEGO sets with the longest lifespans. It also means that four giant LEGO Harry Potter sets may be on shelves simultaneously, should rumours of a $470 Hogwarts Express come to pass later this year.

In fact, both 75978 Diagon Alley and 76391 Hogwarts Icons Collectors’ Edition are also both currently pencilled in for retirement in 2024, so none of the current line-up of LEGO Harry Potter direct-to-consumer sets are going anywhere any time soon. The full list of Wizarding World sets retiring in 2022 otherwise remains unchanged this month, bar 75979 Hedwig now hanging around into 2023.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
