LEGO Ideas family contest winner revealed – new set coming soon

The LEGO Ideas team has announced the winner of its latest contest, which will now go into production to become an official LEGO set.

Hosted in conjunction with US retailer Target, the contest was anchored around the concept of family, with four wildly different builds competing in the final fan vote. While the specific number of votes cast has not been revealed, the winner has now been confirmed as Ivan Guerrero’s Your Family Tree. The model depicts a brick-built tree on a sturdy base, decorated with portraits of minifigures.

It’s a fun concept that saw off stiff competition from Cryptic Albatross’s Station Wagon Vacation, Seb_E’s A Little Moment of Happiness and Finello76’s Build Your Family Picture, which finished up the fan vote in that order. There’s no word yet on when Guerrero’s build will land on shelves, but it joins a long list of LEGO Ideas sets currently in the works.

Veteran Ideas fans will recognise Guerrero’s name: he’s also been responsible for bringing 21324 123 Sesame Street and 40533 Cosmic Cardboard Adventures to shelves, and has a project based on cult US sitcom Community in the third 2022 review. He’s also had numerous other 10K projects rejected at the final hurdle, including ideas based on Gremlins, Avatar and Community (again).

Your Family Tree is another LEGO Ideas set for the fast-growing pile, following the results of the first 2022 review in October. A record four different submissions were given the green light in that review round, including José María’s LEGO Insects, Thomas Lajon’s Orient Express, Jan Woznica’s Tales of the Space Age and Minibrick Productions’ Polaroid OneStep SX-70.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
