LEGO Ideas set orbits past 10K mark for the third time
The third iteration of a space-themed LEGO Ideas design has gathered 10,000 supporters for the third time, marking three consecutive years of going before the review team.
Designed by tonysmyuncle, the would-be set depicts the James Webb Space Telescope. There’s been a LEGO Ideas design from the same designer every year since 2012, the year the real-life telescope launched into space. It’s been in its current position (930,000 miles from Earth) since January of 2022 and its brick-built counterpart is now once again up for consideration to become a LEGO Ideas set.
The build has changed somewhat since its first iteration, with the third and most recent iteration adding the ‘frill’ around the primary mirror. This prevents stars behind the telescope from reflecting off the secondary mirror, according to the fan designer.
“I am an astronomer and I am amazed at the complexity of JWST,” writes tonysmyuncle. “There are so many moving parts and systems that all have to operate together to make the telescope work. I wanted to build a model to help others appreciate this incredible machine.”
Whether this will be third time lucky for JWST remains to be seen. The LEGO Ideas team will deliberate over all projects that gain 10,000 votes during the current review period, of which there are already 13 other designs for JWST to compete with. Here’s a reminder of all of them.
