LEGO MASTERS USA Season 1 Episode 6: The exit interview

One team’s bridge was not up to the exacting LEGO MASTERS USA standards, so Brick Fanatics speaks to one of the departing contestants

Bridge building isn’t easy, as Mel and Jermaine found out in the sixth episode of LEGO MASTERS USA. There was only half a stud in it, but their model did not measure up and it led to the judges sending them home.

In an exclusive interview, Brick Fanatics speaks to Mel about his LEGO MASTERS journey.

Were you confident going into the LEGO MASTERS auditions?

No, I wasn’t confident at all. I’ve only been building for three years and looking around at other very experienced builders really set me back.

How did you prepare for the show?

I began to look at building techniques and getting myself familiar with them.

What was it like arriving in the build room for the first time?

Walking into the building room for the first time made my knees buckle. I began to start thinking about all of the limitless build possibilities… it is overwhelming.

What was the trickiest thing to adjust to when building competitively?

I think adjusting to a ‘build to win’ attitude, as LEGO builders we build to enjoy, build to inspire. This experience was quite the change.

Which was your favourite challenge?

I love to build things tall, it is just easy for me.

What was the toughest challenge for you?

The toughest challenge for me was the technical ones creating with functions, Power Functions are my weakness.

Are there any particular stand-out moments that made you laugh?

The moments where Will is just being Will. He was such a funny guy.

What was the best thing about participating in LEGO MASTERS?

The best thing about being on LEGO MASTERS was, in the end, I made this little family and we all have an unbreakable bond.

Did you learn anything new, about yourself or about LEGO creativity, through being a part of the show?

The experience taught me that I can endure more than I thought. It showed me things about my friend Jermaine that I didn’t know and it taught me that I have a brother, I am not alone.

The next episode of LEGO MASTERS will air in FOX in the USA on Wednesday, March 18 at 9.00pm ET/10.00pm PT.
