Review

It is only right that The LEGO NINJAGO Movie bad guys have some way of battling the Ninja in their impressive mechs, and this Flying Jelly Sub is part of their solution Price: £24.99 / $29.99 / €29.99 Pieces: 341 Available: Now It has been long enough now since the first trailer hit for The LEGO NINJAGO Movie, and the notion of a flying jelly sub seems no more preposterous than a pooch parlour that turns into a Santa’s sleigh inspired battle vehicle*. This set contains the ridiculous villain vehicle along with a little boat and four minifigures. This is a disarmingly straightforward build that includes just enough cleverness to make its brief construction time a treat, turning out better than a regular LEGO NINJAGO version would – as with The LEGO Movie, and The LEGO Batman Movie sets before these, the designers opted to up the ante and succeeded. These movie ranges offer Creator quality builds, instead of the pared down vehicles that regular LEGO play themes tend to present. [gallery columns="4" size="medium" ids="22436,22437,22438,22439"] The way that the tentacles wrap around the body of the craft works well, and the cockpit looks best when the included Hammer Head sits within. There is just enough hint of functionality, with the propellers, to make these seem like a sort of functional vehicle – albeit one designed by a particularly fanciful Bond villain. Practicalities are not completely overlooked, as a coffee cup sits alongside the controls. [gallery columns="4" size="medium" ids="22445,22444,22447,22446"] The little boat build included makes up for the main build being less substantial than 70609 Manta Ray Bomber, although it is nothing too exciting. It works still, reflecting the movie’s style and having just enough shape that it works within The LEGO NINJAGO Movie theme, but its feels closer to a regular set’s side-build than is expected in this range. Four minifigures in a £24.99 set is generous, although one less and a slightly bigger or more details boat would have been welcome though. Hammer Head and Jelly bring the silly villainy, either looking excellent piloting the Jelly Sub. Jay is great, although as he is available elsewhere, it is Takuma that is the highlight. His simple traditional Japanese robes will add to a NINJAGO City diorama, or be very useful outside of the theme altogether. [gallery columns="4" size="medium" ids="22440,22442,22441,22443"] 70610 Flying Jelly Sub is not one of the most exciting sets in the range, but as one of the lower priced entries it is well worth picking up to complement some of the larger sets. It offers a solid build, looks great and is fun to fiddle with – it speaks to the high standard across The LEGO NINJAGO Movie range that this does not make the top five must buys. *an unused concept for The LEGO Movie. 70610 Flying Jelly Sub is available now from shop.LEGO.com.
