LEGO Space 40580 Blacktron Cruiser gift-with-purchase review

LEGO Space 40580 Blacktron Cruiser is a blast from the past, taking a Classic Space set and reimagining it for a modern LEGO fan.

Available from January 1 through to January 14, or more likely while stocks last, 40580 Blacktron Cruiser is being awarded with LEGO purchases of £170 / $190 / €190 at the LEGO Store or online at LEGO.com.

While coming in at the start of 2023, 40580 Blacktron Cruiser certainly feels like a continuation of the LEGO Group’s 90th anniversary of 2022, as much like the brilliant 40567 Forest Hideout, it takes an iconic set from a classic LEGO theme and rebuilds it for a new audience.

Staying true to its inspiration, 40580 Blacktron Cruiser very much echoes original 1987 Space set 6894 Invader, from the original Blacktron subtheme of the late 1980s. It means that as a build and a LEGO experience it’s not the most challenging, nor for younger LEGO fans perhaps the most engaging.

Whilst it should also be noted that the unusual shaping of the ship has been recreated using currently available LEGO parts (rather than bringing back any long-retired moulds) and nothing is printed (those are stickers), there remain details both intricate and loving, to serve as a perfect tribute to a favourite of many an older LEGO fan.

Good gifts-with-purchase instantly pull you in, and 40580 Blacktron Cruiser is certainly one such gift-with-purchase, ticking a lot of boxes for collectors and certainly pulling at a few heartstrings in nostalgia. It’s also quite a bonus to see this gift-with-purchase made available for such a long run-time, offering plenty of chances – stock permitting – of building up a mini-army of these spaceships.

40580 Blacktron Cruiser is available from January 1 through to February 14 at LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores, awarded with purchases of £170 / $190 / €190 or more, while stocks last.

I really want the M:Tron sets to make a comeback. Specifically, the Mega Core Magnetizer (6989). My favorite legacy set.
