The Speed Champions theme expands to include one of the world’s most exclusive hyper cars in LEGO form – the Bugatti Chiron

Price: £12.99 / $14.99 / €14.99 Pieces: 181 Available: Now

Bugatti describes the Chiron as the ‘world’s most powerful, fastest, most luxurious and most exclusive production super sports car’. This minifigure-scale version is the closest most of us will come to owning this car, and it comes with a much more appealing price point.

This set is one of three entry level models introduced as part of the 2017 Speed Champions line, along with 75877 Mercedes-AMG GT3 and 75879 Scuderia Ferrari SF16-H, all of which expand the range of vehicles available in this theme.

Like other Speed Champions cars, this is a six stud-wide build that incorporates some nice build techniques, which makes the process all the more enjoyable. The most interesting part usage has to be the use of the rubber band at the rear of the vehicle to represent the single strip of LED lights, used for the tail light of the original vehicle. This wouldn’t have been anywhere near as effective if the designers had chosen to use either plates or tiles for this part of the vehicle, and I’m struggling to think of a way they could have achieved the same effect using another technique. There’s also a nice use of lightsaber hilts for the air intakes and the tan parts in the cockpit are a nice contrast against the blue/black colour scheme.

The set introduces some new parts including the 1×2 corner plates, which are included in both black and blue, and the dorsal fin, which is used at the rear of the car. The canopy/windscreen is printed and further enhanced by the application of stickers on either side. The build isn’t sticker-intensive, which I’m sure will be a relief to some, and the use of stickers does seem to be well balanced.

Once again the designers have done an excellent job of capturing the shape and lines of the vehicle in LEGO form. Like other Speed Champions sets, the back of the box includes a picture of the real vehicle and the side by side comparison demonstrates the effort that’s gone into getting this build right. The combination of blue and black bricks all works well and the finished build looks great.

Accessories include a wrench, which can also be used to change the hub caps as two sets are included, and there are also three cones that add a little to the playability – but doubling the amount would’ve been welcomed.

This is a well executed build and a nice addition to the Speed Champions fleet. I was pleasantly surprised once the build was complete but with limited playability I feel that the appeal of this set will really be to car lovers and collectors of the Speed Champions theme.
