In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, hero of the Resistance Finn and new character Rose are sent on a mission together that is of vital importance. With BB-8 in tow, it seems that 75176 Resistance Transport Pod will take the protagonists at least part of the way. As with the rest of the new movie line, the official LEGO description reveals little about the role that this new craft will play.

This is a very compact build, so the pieces are used to make a solid, hefty little ship rather than anything too sizable. Putting together this new ship is good fun, as it is quite unusual in the LEGO Star Wars line-up. One of the drawbacks to The Force Awakens range in 2015 was that the new vehicles tended to be boxy, grey affairs – thankfully there is more variety for The Last Jedi, with the Resistance Transport Pod providing a great example of that.

One unique aspect of the vehicle is that it is asymmetrical, unusual within LEGO Star Wars. X-wings and TIE Fighters are very uniform in shape, but this has a cockpit on the right and a sloped shape on the left. The rear of the ship has pipe work and trans blue pieces representing the engines. The various colours and mix of parts used on the ship, as well as its odd shape, suggests that this is an old, beat-up bit of junk rather than anything sleek or powerful.

What is odd about the finished model is that it looks incomplete, as if it is only half a ship. What seems likely is that this is indeed part of a bigger ship that detaches, hence the word ‘Pod’ appearing in the set’s title. During the movie, it is possible that this will detach from a larger vessel as part of Finn and Rose’s mission.

It has been fashionable for years to complain about stickers, but as they are a fact of life it seems excessive to mention them in every review. In the case of Resistance Transport Pod, the complaint is justified, as the trans yellow canopy piece requires seven labels to be applied to it,  not all of which are near the edge of the piece, which makes them hard to line up. Applying these stickers is a frustrating source of stress during an otherwise relaxing build.

The little vessel includes storage at the back for BB-8, accessed by popping off the top. A removable panel at the side allows for thermal detonators and equipment to be stored. The cockpit itself is also easily removed so that the two minifigures can pilot the ship. In terms of play features, turning a dial fires off the obligatory missile and turning a dial subtly incorporated at the back causes the side gun to turn.

The Finn minifigure is different, but not dissimilar, to previous versions of the character. Rose is an excellent minifigure, with a nice design representing her Resistance crew gear and the stand out aspect being her awesome new hair element. BB-8 is present, a droid whose inclusion in a LEGO set always seems to be welcome.

This is a nice, new vehicle to add to the LEGO Star Wars universe, if not the most exciting new design. In its small size it manages to pack in a couple of play features and an all-new character. As the lowest priced set in the LEGO Star Wars: The Last Jedi subtheme, this makes for a suitable entry point.
