LEGO Star Wars 75308 R2-D2 available now

Beep, bop: the brand new LEGO Star Wars 75308 R2-D2 is now available to buy from LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores.

It’s the first large-scale version of the Star Wars galaxy’s most iconic (and arguably most important) astromech since 2012’s 10225 R2-D2, and brings the design of the droid closer in line with 75187 BB-8 and 75278 D-O.

And just like any good redesign, 75308 R2-D2 takes what worked about its predecessor and builds on it with a wealth of new parts, techniques and functions. For instance, inside the smoothed dome – achieved using curved slopes, in contrast to the older set’s studded design – you’ll find an extendable periscope and a compartment to hide a mini replica of Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber.

For more on 75308 R2-D2, check out the launch announcement, browse the full gallery of images, compare both old and new astromechs, see its various functions in action, and learn how its design was partly inspired by a ballpoint pen. (No, seriously!)

If you pick up 75308 R2-D2 between today and May 5, you’ll also bag a free 40451 Tatooine Homestead GWP, and your entire order will qualify for double VIP points (equivalent to 10% cashback). That’s not a bad return for buying it day one, particularly given – as a LEGO.com and LEGO Store exclusive – it probably won’t see hefty discounts in future.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
