LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga gives studs a facelift

A change to the classic currency of LEGO games is coming as LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is giving studs a major makeover.

From the gameplay overview trailer, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker saga looks like a new era for LEGO games with much of the normal formula changed or updated. This includes an especially familiar aspect of the brick-based titles as the upcoming game has given studs a facelift.

As you can see in the video above, studs have changed in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, though the update may not be immediately noticeable.

In LEGO games, studs are used to purchase additional characters, vehicles and other extras and they come in four varieties, with each being worth ten times more than the last starting with silver at 10 studs then progressing to gold, blue and purple.

Whereas old studs were a looping image of a shining metallic piece, the newer versions appear to be given a 3D model, judging by the angles that we can see them spinning at in the trailer. Their shine has also mostly disappeared with the colour of the visible studs being lighter than before, as demonstrated in the gallery above comparing their appearance in The LEGO Movie 2 Videogame to LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga launches on April 5, when you will be able to see the updated digital currency for yourself. Unfortunately, studs can’t be used towards a pre-order of the game, but multiple editions are set to be available soon.
