LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation streaming now on Disney+

Here’s your weekend viewing sorted: LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation, the third animated special from the LEGO Group and Disney, is now available to stream.

Following 2020’s LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special and last year’s LEGO Star Wars Terrifying Tales, the latest seasonal special follows a familiar format, structured around three different short stories. This time round, the heroes of The Rise of Skywalker – Rey, Finn, Poe, Rose, Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO and BB-8 – are holidaying aboard the Galactic Starcruiser when Finn gets separated from the group.

While searching for his pals, the ex-Stormtrooper encounters the Force Ghosts of Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Princess Leia. Each has a tale to tell about vacations gone wrong, but then sort of right, with underlying messages about the true meaning of summer holidays. It’s probably not Oscar-level stuff, but it should keep the kids entertained for an hour or so during their own summer holiday. Plus, it features an original song by ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic, for… reasons.

The best thing to come out of LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation for most of us will be the Darth Vader minifigure in 75340 Star Wars Advent Calendar, which dresses the Sith Lord up in beachwear. Alas, it’s the calendar’s only character based specifically on the special (R2-D2 and C-3PO are in Xmas sweaters), so we’re probably never getting Finn in his Hawaiian shirt.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
